Working in Austria

With one of the strongest economies in the EU, lowest levels of unemployment and highest standards of living in Europe, Austria’s appeal as a destination to live and work goes beyond its status among the greatest cultural centres in the world. Austria has a population of 8.6 million - 15% of whom are foreign citizens – and is bordered by no less than eight countries: Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia and Italy. This has helped encourage cross-border workers, but more people are needed. The strength of the economy has led to a growing shortage of skills within many sectors, and the Austrian government is keen to attract qualified and skilled workers from overseas to help fill the employment gaps that exist. The ski resorts of the Alps combined with the rich heritage that takes in Mozart and Beethoven along with the Baroque architecture that bursts out of so many of its cities, sustains a thriving tourism industry. But these also drive the rest of the economy. Aside from the service sector, the greatest opportunities for overseas workers are within chemical engineering, foodstuffs, electrical engineering, construction, wood and paper, and vehicle manufacturing.
